Issuance of Passports

General Information on Passports

Sri Lankan citizens by decent or registration are eligible to apply for Sri Lankan passport.

Applicants are requested to submit the following documents enabling this Mission to forward the applications to the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.

The process may take approximately from 06 to 08 weeks.

Step 01: Sending the Passport Application

1. Application form is similar to present application (K35A).

Note: you should keep the signatures before an embassy official, therefore please contact the Mission before you keep the signatures.

2. Application should be scanned with the attached photos in both sides. (front page and signature page)
3. Application and documents should be scanned according to the following order.

1. Duly filled application form with a photograph
2. Copy of Passport
3. Copy of Birth Certificate
4. Copy of Identity card
5. Any relevant supporting documents (Ex: Marriage certificate, Citizenship certificate, Dual Certificate, Foreign passport copy, Parents consent letters and Parent's passport copies, etc.)

Note: You should produce/show originals of all above copies when you sign for the passport application before an embassy official.

4. Do not attach edited photographs or documents.

Other than the scanned application, applicant's photograph should be attached separately and it should be according to the given standards by the immigration circulars.

• Clear/Fresh/with open ears/ Open a forehead, without scarf or spectacles new photographs
• The photographs should be taken with in three (03) months
• Both ears should be clearly visible
• Size - Width: 35mm, Height: 45mm

Step 04: payment

Fee for applying for a new passport is Rub. 11,100.00.

The Mission will provide the account details for the payment, after screening the application.

Sri Lankan passports can not be extended beyond 10 years from the date of issue of the passport. ‘M’ series and ‘N’ series passports issued before the year 2004 are valid for 5 years and can be extended by the Department of Immigration and Emigration (competent authority in Colombo) or Sri Lankan Embassy for another 5 years not exceeding 10 years totally.
